Observation Narrative
Plot is situated about 110 meters from the main channel of the Blackwater River, on a low terrace between branches of a deeply flooded slough supporting baldcypress - water tupelo swamp. Although it is probably shallowly and briefly inundated at time (most likely during the winter and spring), the terrace is relatively dry and no mottling was found in the soil. The vegetation is an oak-dominated forest (Quercus laurifolia, Q. lyrata) with open understory of Acer rubrum, Ilex opaca, Vaccinium elliottii, and various woody vines. The herb layer is patchy and variably dominated by sedges and ferns.
